Understanding individual company requirements in order to choose the right ERP system and maximise ROI

John Haslam
John Haslam, Senior Consultant, ERP Advice Centre Ltd
  • Set a realistic budget - You have been quoted between £75K and £300K by five suppliers for the same number of users and business applications. How can this be? Do you just pick a figure in the middle or is their a more scientific approach?
  • Identify your potential return on investment - In practice, companies look for gains in both efficiency and effectiveness to improve their profits. We explain how a new ERP system can help to achieve this and how you can quantify the benefits.
  • Make sure your business requirements are met - Although one could simply ask the user, it is fair to say that this would generally result in a list of features that were liked and general complaints about some dislikes, rather than a full appreciation of how things could be done differently and better. We consider how the process could be improved.
  • The selection process - How many vendors to include? What level of detail to ask for at what stage? Should you do an RFI?  How long should the process take? When to shortlist? How do you structure the process?
  • Contract negotiation - Some points to consider before you sign up, including how to deal with future requirements.
