GCSE results - business concerned at numbers failing to achieve in basic subjects

The CBI has said it is concerned at the numbers failing to do well in basic subjects at GSCE level.

While the employer’s organisation recognised that overall grades were improving, it expressed concern that many young people were not making the grade in maths and English.

Margaret Murray, the CBI's Head of Learning and Skills, commented: "It's good news for the UK's competitiveness that overall grades are rising. But too many pupils still perform poorly in English and maths. A grade C or above in these core subjects is becoming the threshold to employment. Employers are concerned that just under half of young people fail to achieve this standard in maths, and 40 per cent fail to do so in English."

The CBI said the government needs to be more ambitious in building on the excellent progress made in primary schools. It should set and achieve targets for over three-quarters of young people (76 per cent) to gain a grade C in English and over two thirds (68 per cent) in maths by 2006.
