UK manufacturing suffered a further blow this month as power tool manufacturer Black & Decker announced it was to move most of its Durham production to the Czech Republic.
The cost-cutting move will mean the loss of 950 jobs at the Durham plant by the end of next year.
The US-based company cited increasing competition from low-cost imports from south-east Asia as a major factor in its decision to shift production.
Black & Decker has accepted a financial package put together by regional development agency, One NorthEast, to secure work for the remaining 450 workers for the next five years. The Durham plant will now concentrate on the production of motors and components as well as design and engineering.
