Scheme to attract young engineers
Schools and colleges across Britain have again been participating in the Young Engineer for Britain competition. At a time when the engineering skills shortage is hitting manufacturing hard, competitions of this nature, sponsored by leading manufacturers, are increasing young people’s understanding of engineering, and encouraging engineering as a career.
Ben Pauling, 18, from the Thames Valley, won the overall title of Young Engineer for Britain by designing and building the ‘Irreguwrap’, an ingenious device that makes irregular size bales of hay more manageable and stable for loading and transporting by wrapping them into a large single bale.
During the day, younger students worked on the K’Nex engineering construction challenge, and the award of the Junior Engineers for Britain 2002 was shared by two primary school pupils from Cornwall: Lawrence Engledow and Glyn Furnival, both aged 11, from Stithians County Primary School, near Redruth.
The Young Engineers Club of the Year 2002 was awarded to Duncanrig Secondary School is East Kilbride, Scotland. The team worked on a wide variety of engineering projects over the past year, and has won a visit to one of Europe’s leading shipyards, as guests of Young Engineers sponsor Lloyd’s Register.
