Figures released yesterday show that Britain's car industry is booming. Production increased by almost 10 per cent last month when output rose to more than 144,000, bringing the total so far this year to 1.2m - up 13 per cent on a year earlier.
Output is being driven by exports, with production for overseas up 16 per cent in the third quarter. Over the past year, production for export has risen by 22 per cent.
Commenting on the figures ahead of the British International Motor Show 2002, Chris Macgowan, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said: "The fact that a fifth of the show's debut models has been built at UK plants serves to underpin our position as a world force in car manufacturing."
