Output may be on the up but UK car manufacturers will be faced with large daily fine if they fail to comply with EU recycling legislation, which should have become law last April.
The UK is one of 10 countries that have not met the deadline and has two months to comply with the end-of-life vehicle directive.
Manufacturers became liable for the disposal of all new cars from this July and from January 2007 the legislation will apply to old cars. Targets include recycling of 85 per cent of every car by 2006 and 95 per cent by 2015.
