R Griggs Group, makers of Dr Martens boots, is planning to move production to China to take advantage of lower labour costs.
Over 1000 jobs will be lost at the company’s factories in Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Somerset. Only a small number of office and design staff will remain in the UK.
“Dr Martens will remain a brand true to its heritage and deliver footwear of the highest quality,” said managing director David Suddens. “The offshore strategy is the first step in moving the company and the brand forward in a positive direction.”
