Steel jobs at risk

Tony Pedder, chief executive of Anglo-Dutch steel producer Corus, has warned in a letter to industry secretary Patricia Hewitt that thousands of jobs could be lost if eastern European countries joining the EU are allowed to carry on subsidising their steel industries.

If the EU did not insist on free competition from the date of entry, said Mr Pedder, the threat to jobs would be greater than that posed by US sanctions earlier this year.
