John Edmonds has said he will retire from his post as general secretary of the GMB a year earlier than expected.
The GMB said Mr Edmonds made his decision so that his deputy, Steve Pickering, could retire at the normal age.
But after 16 years at the top of Britain’s fourth largest union, which represents around 700,000 workers across manufacturing, services and the private and public sectors, many suggest that he is simply in need of a rest.
Mr Edmonds will be remembered for his scathing attacks on the UK’s overpaid bosses, whom he branded as “greedy bastards”, his vehement opposition to the private finance initiative agenda, and his strong support for UK entry to the euro.
