Government faces tough choice over British Energy

The immediate future of British Energy is subject to a delicate balancing act.

The government’s emergency £650 million loan facility runs out at the end of November, but it seems unlikely that alternative funding can be arranged before then, leaving an unpalatable choice between an extension of the loan period, or letting the company slide into administration.

Energy minister Brian Wilson is a supporter of nuclear energy, as is Patricia Hewitt, but further government help for British Energy could be seen as damaging to other forms of energy generation.
