With all the high profile publicity about manufacturers relocating to countries with low labour costs, it’s easy to overlook the fact that new factories are still being built in the UK.
Magna Kansei, the Canadian/Japanese owned automotive components supplier, has invested £6 million in an extension to its existing facilities near the Nissan factory in Sunderland, which is being opened by Nissan UK managing director John Cushnaghan.
The Nissan plant is acclaimed as Europe’s most productive car factory, an achievement which relies to a large extent on synchronous suppliers like Magna Kansei adopting just-in-time techniques and modern process tools like six sigma. Efforts to pass these techniques down the supply chain have been boosted by a £26 million programme announced by the North East Productivity Alliance.
The new Magna Kansei plant will make the cockpit assembly for the new Micra.
