Microsoft’s longstanding court action in the United States appears to be over.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly issued a 300 page report on Friday which effectively overrules the objections of nine US states to the settlement already agreed between Microsoft, the US Justice Department and nine other states.
Microsoft now faces an investigation by the European Commission for anti-competitive behaviour, headed by Mario Monti. While Microsoft is naturally encouraging Europe to take account of the US judgement, however, the issues it faces in Europe are about more recent activities, such as the effects on competition of bundling its Media Player with the Windows operating system and designing Windows to favour its own server applications.
A decision is expected by the end of the year.
