More days lost through disputes

More days were lost through labour disputes in 2001 than in any year since 1996 when 1.3 million days were lost, according to the latest issue of Labour Market Trends.

In 2001, 525,000 days were lost, an increase on the 499,000 days lost in 2000.

The region with the highest rate of days lost was the West Midlands, at 33 per thousand employees. Northern Ireland had the lowest rate at one day lost per thousand employees.

The biggest cause of days lost were disputes over working conditions and supervision. This accounted for 33 per cent of all days lost. Wage disputes accounted for 27 per cent, down from 77 per cent in 2000 and well below their usual figure in recent years. Not since 1993 have wages disputes accounted for less than half of all days lost.
