Microsoft Establishes Antitrust Compliance Committee

Microsoft has announced the composition of the Antitrust Compliance Committee it was ordered to set up by a Federal District Court last week.

District Court Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly had directed that the committee be set up and include at least three members who are not present or former employees of Microsoft. However, the decision not to order the break up of the Microsoft conglomerate in exchange for softer options continues to lead commentators to suggest that George Bush's Republican administration has gone soft on tackling what many believe to be the unfairly monopolistic domination of Bill Gates' all-conquering empire.

The Antitrust Compliance Committee will be chaired by board member Dr James I. Cash who is also a professor at Harvard Business School and chairman of Harvard Business School Publishing. He joined the Microsoft board in June 2001.

"Microsoft has moved rapidly to fulfill our responsibilities here," said Gates. "We recognize that we will be closely scrutinized by the government and our competitors. We will devote all the time, energy and resources needed to meet our new obligations."

The board had recognized and appreciated the important roles the Department of Justice and each of the states attorneys general would play in their oversight of Microsoft's compliance with judgment, Microsoft added.
