Mixed picture for machine sales

Little publicised Government statistics on the sales of metalworking machine tools, may, in some small measure, give an indication of manufacturing industry investment trends.

According to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics, in the three months to September 2002, total sales of metalworking machine tools increased by 2.2 per cent over the previous quarter but, at £62.5 million, were 20 per cent down on the same period a year ago. Home sales fared better than exports.

Outstanding orders at the end of September were worth just short of £150 million, 11 per cent lower than at the end of the previous quarter and around 25 per cent less than at the end of September 2001.
