Newly elected Amicus General Secretary, Derek Simpson will tell the Government to end the haemorrhage of quality jobs from the North West and other industrial areas with tough European style employment laws.
The new union boss is concerned that job losses at Cunard Metal Box, Marconi, and Carborundum, could have been avoided with stronger laws to protect jobs.
Mr Simpson will addressing a trade union audience at the Merseyside Unemployed Centre today to voice his concerns. In a statement released by Amicus, he said: "Its too cheap and its too easy to sack working people in the UK. Well paid quality jobs are leaking away from the North West and all that's left are casual low paid McJobs or unemployment."
He will also tell the Government it should raise minimum level redundancy pay, introduce a requirement for bosses to justify all mass redundancies to the DTi and prove there are no alternatives.
"In Europe it's much harder and expensive to sack staff, it is no surprise that multinational companies choose so often to cut jobs in the UK. We fear for the future of our members in companies like Vauxhall for this very reason," said Mr Simpson.
