CBI and TUC join forces to conquer basic skills shortage

A joint report between the CBI and the TUC, has shown that one in five adults do not have the basic literacy or numeracy skills to match the majority of children starting secondary school.

The new report on the basic skills challenge facing the UK ‘Brushing up the basics’, states that seven million adults have basic skills difficulties costing the UK economy around £10 billion each year. To tackle this skills crisis the report highlights the important role that employers and unions can play.

As part of SkillCity, the UK's skills event, TUC Head of Organisation Francis O'Grady will be speaking to the Union Learning Fund conference at Old Trafford, Manchester later today alongside Adult Skills Minister Ivan Lewis MP.
