Climate Change Levy under attack from the Royal Society

The Royal Society is to call on government to scrap the Climate Change Levy, which it believes in an inefficient way of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

The levy ignores important sources of emission because it is not applied to households or the transport sector, and it also penalises electricity sources that do not produce green house gases.

The report suggests that the levy should be replaced by a carbon tax or a system of carbon dioxide permits. These would produce revenues that could be recycled resulting in a modest cost to the economy.

Such a tax would be of benefit to companies specialising in wind, wave, tidal and nuclear energy technology.
