Engineering manufacturer cuts more jobs

Howmet, a major engineering manufacturer based in east Devon, is set to axe more than 65 jobs.

The company, which makes cooling blades for gas turbines and jet engines, blamed a downturn in the power station turbine market.

It is the fifth time this year that the firm has been forced to make redundancies. The losses take the number of job cuts at Howmet up to 239 this year; the company employed 1,100 people at the start of 2002.
