GLASS: £23m investment secures continued UK production
United Glass has announced it is to invest £23 million in its Alloa manufacturing site to ensure the viability of the plant over the next three years. The investment, backed with a Regional Selective assistance grant of £975,000, will provide for the construction of a new central services building to consolidate support and ancillary services currently dispersed across the site, the construction of line extension and the automation of pallet handling and packing areas. A 250,000 sq ft warehouse extension will be constructed, and a high-productivity forming machine installed to service the growing demand for 25/33cl containers for the ready to drink market.
Iain Gray, minister for enterprise, transport and lifelong learning, said: “I am confident that this money, along with the company’s drive to deliver efficiency gains, can secure a long-term future for the company in Alloa.”
The plant, which makes bottles for the distilled spirits, beers and beverage industries, is the town’s leading private employer.
The project will also bring associated improvements such as the remediation of contaminated land, reduced road haulage requirements and opportunities for retraining certain personnel.
