Not all robots are in manufacturing

Thirty years on from the invention of manufacturing's heavy welding and painting robots, a spooky new survey suggests their cousins are getting ready to take over the world.

More than 1 in 5 people believe that the day will come when robots take over the world.

A survey by humanoid robot distributor Radica also revealed that over half the population believes that one-day robots may form the bulk of our national armies. Over a third said they would consider keeping a robot instead of a pet and, eerily, nearly a third would consider having a robot instead of a child.

``The survey was carried out to determine the British public's attitude towards robots and how they believe they will shape our future,'' commented Radica MD John Doughty.

R2D2 came top of a poll to determine the world's most famous robot.
