At a panel debate at the CBI conference yesterday, Patricia Hewitt claimed that the government has learnt its lessons on red tape, and that the prime Minister is taking a personal interest in addressing the issue.
The trade and industry secretary admitted that over-regulation by government was a real problem for business, and said that it stemmed from a combination of Brussels generated rules and Whitehall’s obsession with details.
Hewitt pledged that the government would no longer ‘gold plate’ laws generated by the European Commission by introducing more than the minimum regulation required. But, she pointed out that red tape could not be cut over night.
