BAE bid gaining ground

BAE Systems, which has been locked in a battle for a £10 billion contract to build and maintain two aircraft carriers for the Royal Navy, is inching ahead of its main rivals, the French group Thales.

Both companies have promised that the building work would be carried out in British shipyards, creating about 10,000 jobs. However, it is feared that Thales would undertake much of the design work in France.

Patricia Hewitt told the CBI conference that the maintenance of British jobs would be a key issue in the final decision which will be announced next February.
