SKILLS: World record holder launches campaign to highlight engineering excellence

The British Olympic Association is to play a part in trying to turn the tide of popular opin-ion, and to present engineering as an attrac-tive career to young people.

The ‘Engineering in the Olympics’ cam-paign launched at the end of November is based on a partnership between the British Olympic Association (BOA) and the Engin-eering Technology Board (etb). Its role is to highlight the critical role that science, engin-eering and technology play in athletes’ part-icipation and success at the Olympics. Sports engineering examples range from the design of the latest composite carbon-fibre racing bikes and the assessment of swimmers’ stroke velocity to the monitoring of extreme physical performance.

Olympic triple jump Gold medallist and world record holder, Jonathan Edwards, launched the year-long campaign which will showcase the cutting edge work that contri-butes to the Olympic experience. The etb plans to do this through a series of regional road shows, public debates, competitions and a schools lecture tour during 2004.

Alan Clark, chief executive of the Engineering and Technology Board, said:

“It is critical to Britain’s future as a manu-facturing and wealth creating nation that more young people pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. For example British science and engineering professionals are providing what could be the difference between Gold and Silver medals for the GB Cycling team with the ‘Athen’s Bike’.

The etb’s ‘Engineering in the Olympics’ campaign aims to encourage and inspire a new generation of engineers by championing the innovative and dynamic opportunities that this sector can offer.”
