South east manufacturing centre of excellence

Regional Centre for Manufacturing Excellence given green light as part of £15m initiative.

A new centre for excellence offering hands-on advice and support to manufacturers in the South East was formally launched by the Government yesterday.

The centre forms part of a £15m DTI initiative to boost manufacturing throughout England and Wales.

The new Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) set-up by DTI in partnership with the South East Development Agency, SEEDA, has established the Engineering Employers Federation (EEF) South as the Regional Centre for delivering the service in the South East.

The centre, based at Hook in Hampshire, will help provide the opportunity for companies in the South East to become more productive and competitive.

The regional centre will provide practical support from a core team in a range of manufacturing

issues, including site visits and diagnostic analysis; information and advice on specific manufacturing subjects through practical workshops and seminars; and information and sign-posting by telephone, e-mail and website.

Welcoming the MAS and the Regional Centre Director of SEEDA's Business & International Division Marianne Neville-Rolfe said: "We have over 20,000 manufacturing SMEs in the South East employing more than 12 per cent of the area's workforce. Manufacturing is growing in

the South East and it is vital that we support it. This initiative will provide the hands-on advice and practical aid which small firms need to solve their problems and improve their performance."
