Boost for UK car production

UK car production is on the up, boosted by higher exports.

Government figures out today show total car production for the three months to April rose by 2.8 per cent compared with the previous three months. Production for export increased by 4.8 per cent in the period, while production for the home market fell by 2.2 per cent.

In comparison with the same three months a year ago, total production rose by four per cent. Production for export was 6.4 per cent up, while home production fell by 1.8 per cent.

Over 143,000 cars were produced in the UK in April, of which just under 106,000 were for the export market and over 37,000 for the home market. Total car production in April 2005 was 10.6 per cent higher than in April 2004. Production for the home market in April 2005 was 10.3 per cent higher than in April 2004, while production for the export market rose by 10.6 per cent.

UK production of commercial vehicles in the three months to April rose by 6.3 per cent compared with the previous three months, and by 8.3 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
