David Lennan, director general of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), says he has been sacked. The organisation announced on Thursday that Mr Lennan was leaving.
Mr Lennan told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "There was a board meeting and I was totally shocked to find I had lost my job at the end of it. I have no reasons as to why this has happened."
BCC spokesman Malik Thahid told BBC News Online that the director general had been "asked to leave" by the board. He said it was part of continuing discussions about the way the Chambers of Commerce are moving forward.
Mr Lennan took up his post in July. He said he was appointed to lead the programme of change at the organisation.
The BCC's annual conference is taking place next Monday. Mr Thahid said as far as the BCC was concerned the conference would be "business as ususal".
