CGNU has pushed through controversial plans to change its name to Aviva.
At its annual general meeting in London, the resolution was supported by 94.4 per cent of votes, with 5.6 per cent against. The name change will come into effect from July 1.
The move came despite pressure from shareholder group the National Association of Pension Funds for voters to abstain. An NAPF spokesman said it had asked shareholders to abstain after being approached by transport firm Arriva.
Regarding the similarities to the name Arriva, the CGNU spokeswoman said: "These are two different brands and two different businesses and we don't believe that any confusion will arise."
CGNU was formed in May, 2000, through the merger of Norwich Union and CGU.
