Battery maker Saft is to invest in a new manufacturing site in Britain to replace its facilities in South Shields, which were acquired in 2001.
The company supplies batteries for industrial and defence markets including the Ministry of Defence.
The company said that its existing UK site no longer meets future needs and plans to upgrade to a new manufacturing site rather than investing in upgrading its present base.
Saft is working with local and regional bodies to identify a suitable location for the development of its new facility in the North East of England.
