Pay awards in the UK manufacturing sector changed little in the year to May, according to pay specialists Industrial Relations Services (IRS).
Pay deals remained unchanged at three per cent in the year to May, unchanged from the same period a year ago, suggesting that rises in overall inflation had not had much impact on the industry.
Wage deals in the engineering and metals, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and general manufacturing sub-sectors stood at three per cent. For paper and printing, awards were at 2.8 per cent and at 2.75 per cent for food, drink and tobacco. Deals in textiles were the lowest, at 2.5 per cent.
However IRS said there was a slowdown in the pace of bargaining, with almost half the pay awards worth less than a year ago. Almost half of all manufacturing pay settlements were lower than the same bargaining group received as a result of its previous pay review. About one-third gained a higher increase in 2006 and just over a fifth received exactly the same percentage rise.
