BAE contract will save taxpayers £18 million

British aerospace and defence group BAE Systems has been awarded a £74 million government contract designed to improve the availability of Royal Navy and RAF Hawk jets and cut support costs.

The contract, awarded by defence procurement minister Lord Drayson, will reduce the Hawk T Mk1 aircraft’s support costs by drawing together previous multiple contracts into one.

As prime contractor, the UK MOD, the RN, RAF will work with BAE Systems and industry partner Babcock Defence Services (BDS) in delivering the Hawk Integrated Operational Support (HIOS) programme.

Lord Drayson said the contract would transform the way the aircraft was supported and guarantee aircraft availability for training. "The Hawk has a superb training record, and The Red Arrows aerobatic team has provided the world with awe-inspiring displays demonstrating not only the aircraft's tremendous performance but also our world class pilot training. This contract is also good news for the British taxpayer, saving about £18 million over the next four years," he said.

The aircraft maintenance will be through BAE Systems' prime-contractor BDS at RAF Valley, Anglesey.

The Hawk T Mk1 fleet of 133 advanced jet trainer aircraft is used to train fast-jet pilots in front line tactics and weapons skills.
