Rolls-Royce has entered into two partnerships with the University of Birmingham focusing on casting technology and process modelling.

The casting partnership, joint funded by Rolls Royce and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, will act as a key supplier of vital technology with a remit to develop step change technologies and provide incremental process improvements in all aspects of mould making and casting. The process modelling partnership between the university, Rolls-Royce, the ESI Group and hardware partners will undertake research in the simulation of manufacturing processes with an emphasis on welding, casting, heat treatment and forming operations. A new state-of-the-art laboratory is to be set up for this purpose at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre.
