Tough times lie ahead for the design industry due to the threat of emerging markets. “Be afraid. Be very afraid,” said Dick Powell, one of the UK’s leading industrial designers, speaking at an industry debate on the future of design in the UK hosted by the Audi Design Foundation. The debate highlighted the fact that there are 1100 design colleges currently being developed in China. Design and creativity in the UK need a connection with output, and without an understanding of the new world of outsourcing and manufacturing migration, design students would be unlikely to succeed. A new approach to design education was needed.
