The number of people employed in UK manufacturing has finally dipped below the three million mark with official data recording the lowest figure for a generation.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there were 2.97 million jobs in the UK’s manufacturing industries in the three months to January 2007 – 59,000 fewer than at the same time a year ago.
Across the economy, the employment rate for people of working age was 74.4 per cent for the three months, down 0.1 both from the previous quarter and on the year.
The number of jobs increased by 88,000 over the quarter and by 306,000 over the year to reach 31.58 million in December 2006, the highest figure since comparable records began in 1959.
The unemployment rate was 5.5 per cent, unchanged on the quarter but up 0.4 over the year.
