UK-based confectionery giant, Cadbury-Schweppes is to face prosecution over the salmonella contamination found in its chocolate last year.
Birmingham City Council has announced that it is to prosecute Cadbury Schweppes for a breach of health and safety legislation at its plant in Marlbrook Herefordshire. The company is accused of the putting unsafe chocolate products on the market, failing to inform the authorities as soon as it found out about it, failing to ‘identify hazards from ready to eat chocolate products contaminated with Salmonella’ and failing to ‘identify critical control point and corrective actions’.
In a statement, a spokesman for Cadbury has said: “e have fully co-operated with the authorities throughout their inquires and we will examine the charges that have been brought.”
The prosecution follows an investigation by the council’s public health officers in the wake of the salmonella outbreak at Cadbury’s plant in Marlbrook last January. The contamination was blamed on a leaking pipe.
Over a million chocolate bars had to be recalled, and the cost of the contamination has so far been estimated at around £30 million.
