Now it’s official, the advertising slogan that irritated every non-driver of Japan’s most famous manufacturing and marketing product has come to pass. The car in front really is more than likely to be a Toyota.
The company that gave the world its now oft-cloned Toyota Manufacturing System and woke up companies from aircraft engine makers to factory floor layers to what has become universally known as Lean Manufacturing, has at last fulfilled the pundits predictions and become the maker of the world’s biggest selling cars.
For the first quarter of this 2007, Toyota has ceased to be the filling in the US car making sandwich by overtaking its rival General Motors for the first time. Ford remains in third place.
The Japanese group announced today that it sales had grown nine per cent to 2.35 million vehicles, compared with GM’s 2.26 million.
The long heralded ascension puts the Japanese company on target to hit sales of approaching 10 million by the end of 2007.
