Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker, expects more than half of the world's population to have a mobile phone before the end of 2007.

Kai Oistamo, head of the company’s mobile phone unit, said he expects three billion people to have access to a mobile phone by the end of the year, and four billion in 2010.

But Mr Oistamo said that the development, boosted by strong growth in emerging markets such as Africa and China, will make it difficult for profits.

The Finnish company currently has a 36 per cent global market share of sold handsets, but has plans to reach 40 per cent in the long term.

It recorded overall sales of £6.7 billion in the first quarter, but net sales of mobile phones fell five per cent to £3.8 billion despite a 21 per cent increase in volume sales.
