AUTOMOTIVE: Ecotricity seeks permission for wind farm
High performance sports car-maker, Group Lotus, is planning another step in its drive to move to low carbon operations. The company hopes to build a wind park at the Lotus site near Norwich, which could potentially provide 100 per cent of the company’s electricity needs.
Lotus has carried out an extensive assessment of its premises at Hethel, examining the potential for three turbines to be located at the centre of the test track. The electricity generated by these would power the manufacturing facility, including assembly halls, paint shop and composite shops, the engine test facility and CAD design and analysis tools, project and administration offices. Any excess power would then be fed into the local grid.
Under the Merchant Wind Power scheme Ecotricity, the UK’s largest independent green energy supplier, has partnered with Lotus, and is seeking planning permission for the wind farm from the South Norfolk District Council.
Lotus has developed the bio-ethanol powered Lotus Exige 265E and conducted research into compressed natural gas powered cars and hybrid technology, and is working on advanced electric vehicles.
