Milk plant faces closure

According to reports, Dairy Crest has confirmed that one of its regional dairies could close later this year

After much speculation, Dairy Crest has issued a statement confirming that talks with staff and unions are currently underway about the possible closure of its plant at Totnes, Devon.

The milk bottling and production factory is one of two regional dairies that produces fresh milk for retail and households. The closure would result in a loss of all 164 workers.

The decision was prompted by an internal review that highlighted the option to consolidate its operations in order to save on costs and the limited plans for expansion due to the positioning of the site.

According to the BBC, company spokeswoman Sinead Noble said: "If we were going to keep it we would have to modernise it and make it bigger and better but we can't because the plant is effectively landlocked between the railway station and housing. This decision has not been taken lightly."
