Sir Digby Jones appointed as Minister for Trade & Investment by Gordon Brown.
The EEF, the manufacturers' organisation has given a strong endorsement of the appointment along with urging government backing in his role with adequate resources for export support.
Commenting, EEF director general, Martin Temple, said: "Sir Digby worked tirelessly to promote British business interests overseas when he was CBI Director General and his appointment is a welcome boost for manufacturers fighting hard in overseas markets. It is essential that the Prime Minister backs him in this role with a level of funding for trade support commensurate with the world's fourth biggest economy."
According to latest figures funding for trade support overall has now fallen by a third between 2003/04 and 2007/08
