Pfizer, the world’s largest drug company, is to close its last British manufacturing plant, with the loss of 420 jobs.
The New York-based pharmaceutical firm said the closure of its manufacturing arm in Sandwich, Kent was the result of ongoing consolidation of its global manufacturing operations.
Pfizer, which makes Viagra and cholesterol-fighter Lipitor, said the redundancies would be phased in over the next two years.
The decision ends 53 years of manufacturing at the plant, but Sandwich will remain home to one of Pfizer’s four key global research and development programmes. This operation, which employs around 3,000 people, remains unaffected by the decision.
“It is with regret that we announce our decision to end manufacturing operations in Sandwich,” said Tony Maddaluna, vice-president of Pfizer Global Manufacturing. “This is the latest in a number of global manufacturing changes to ensure we are operating as efficiently effectively as possible.”
