Unilever sheds jobs

Unilever has now implemented its plan to cut 20,000 jobs around the business over the ensuing four years. UK Chairman, Dave Lewis, described the changes as a “significant step forward in increasing the responsiveness of our manufacturing in the UK.”

Announcing that 300 positions are to be shed over the next 12 months, the company has also indicated the first factories to be targeted.

The Wirral and Warrington sites are set to lose 140 and 60 workers respectively, while the Marmite-producing Burton-on-Trent factory will have 114 jobs cut. Production of Pot Noodle ingredients is also to be ceased at this site, and transferred to Colman’s of Norwich.

Joao Ribeiro, Wirral and Warrington works director, and Mark Wearing, Burton factory manager, said that unions were to be informed straight away, adding that “This change will take 12 months to complete, and throughout this period we will be offering an extensive employee support programme to assist all staff.”

Next on the review list are the Leeds, Essex and Crumlin, Wales sites, and based on the figures, it would seem more job cuts are on the horizon for Unilever.
