FOOD: Turbines to provide over half annual power requirement

The first wind turbines to be installed at a major food manufacturing plant are to be built and commissioned at the McCain Foods chip factory in Whittlesey. Reaching ?80 metres in height, the three turbines will be the highest on-shore in England, and are due to be erected and brought into operation in November 2007. Once commissioned, they?will provide up to 60 per cent of the annual power requirement of the plant.

McCain has taken the project through a lengthy planning application process, consulting with groups including the local community, English Nature, RSPB, and the local and district council. Planning permission was granted in May.

Corporate affairs director Bill Bartlett said: “We are very grateful to all the organisations that have been involved in the consultation process, and we are particularly delighted they have been willing to engage with us. Through mutual cooperation, McCain and the various local groups have managed to secure the support of the local community; the protection of local wildlife; and the development of a landmark manufacturing facility that offers green solutions to big business’ dependency on non-sustainable power.”
