AEROSPACE: Entering a defining period where success depends on skills and new technology

The Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), which represents over 2,600 companies across the UK, has a announced the appointment of Cobham’s chief executive, Allan Cook, as its new president. He plans to steer the organisation through what has been described as a defining period for the aerospace sector.

Speaking at the SBAC’s annual dinner, Cook said that the aerospace industry was entering a defining period where continued global success depended on growth, productivity, skills and new technology.

“One of our industry’s biggest challenges is how we respond to the environmental threat of climate change. Some clamour for restrictions, legislation, green taxes and curtailment – this cannot be the way forward.

“To travel and to travel by air is one of the great freedoms of the 21st century. The way forward is through the application of technology and innovation. And this is our job. To help facilitate air travel that minimises the impact on the environment.”

He cited the recent launch of the Boeing 787 powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine, as a demonstration of the industry’s ability to develop progressively ‘greener’ aviation.

“The challenges and threats facing the sector are significant; competition grows fiercer every year, maintaining leadership in technology becomes ever harder, and finding the skills and people for a vibrant future is ever more difficult,” he said.
