Grampian Country Food Group has announced the planned closure of its Attleborough, Norfolk factory, with 300 workers set to lose their jobs.
The news comes following the leaked release of a company memo, which indicated that the company was incurring financial losses of £100,000 per week, due to input price rises and reduced business.
“In consultation with representatives of the site workforce we have examined every alternative for the site. However, due to the decline in the breaded and coated poultry sector and the unprofitable nature of this business, regrettably we have come to the decision to close the Attleborough facility,” said site managing director Tom Strang.
“The business will now be consulting with all 300 employees and their nominated representatives on possible alternative employment either within the Grampian Group or with companies locally,” Strang explained, while a Department for Work and Pensions spokesman said: “Jobcentre Plus is meeting with representatives of Grampian Foods and will work with the company to offer support to the workers affected by the statement.”
Described by Peter Francis, chairman of Breckland Council, as “a massive blow to the town”, the Attleborough factory is due to close on 24 February 2008.
