The Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain has announced that the closure of 28 Remploy factories will go ahead despite controversy.
Ministers put the plans down to high costs associated with the Remploy sites, with Hain explaining to the Commons that, while the closures will cause much “disappointment”, they are vital to the continuation of the company’s operations.
No compulsory redundancies are planned, and “all those disabled workers who move into new employment will have their terms and conditions, including membership of their final salary pension scheme, protected,” said Hain.
Unions have continued to condemn the move, however, saying that the closures could be avoided if the company’s management team was to be replaced.
“This announcement has angered Remploy workers and their supporters,” said general secretary of GMB union Paul Kenny, adding: “This government-controlled operation has failed its people, its principles and its purpose.
“These closures are completely unnecessary. If Remploy was called Northern Rock, I am certain that we would not be seeing a single redundancy.”
