Engineering firm Crane Limited has sold its Nacton Road site in Ipswich, which will result in the loss of 200 jobs.
The company, which began operations in Ipswich in 1927, will cease its manufacture of malleable iron fittings at Nacton Road by the end of 2008, with other operations relocating to its Hitchin site. The head office will remain in Ipswich, although a move to new premises is likely.
“It’s devastating for our members and highly disappointing to us,” said Ian Marshall, regional officer for Unite. “There is nothing comparable now in the locality and it will be difficult for them to find similar jobs in and around Ipswich.”
According to managing director Peter G Wilson, the company is to begin a 90-day consultation with unions as of next week.
Ipswich MP Chris Mole emphasised the importance of speedy action: “We need to ensure these people get access to retraining and skills that will enable them to get back into the labour market as soon as possible.”
