DataLase collaborates with NASA

Laser coding and printing firm DataLase is to collaborate with NASA and Intermec in the launch of RFID tags and aluminium discs into space.
The project is part of NASA’s International Space Station (ISS) research and will test the durability of the components under space conditions.
If testing proves successful, the technology will be added to NASA’s list of part identification requirements and will become commonplace on future space missions in order to track and trace parts and equipment. The systems would also be added to the approved list of identification requirements used by the US Armed Forces, allowing it to be integrated into existing manufacturing systems for weapons and equipment tracking.
“Everyone involved with the project is very proud to be part of [this] mission... and it is gratifying to be recognised by technology leaders such as NASA. We are confident our solution will stand up to the rigorous requirements and look forward to undertaking continued programs with NASA and related bodies,” said DataLase CEO Steve Kelly.
