A Barnsley baker has landed a surprise contract to supply France with thousands of loaves of bread.
Foster’s Bakery is now to ship 7,000 square loaves each month to a French firm which had complained that locally made bread was going stale too quickly. The loaves will be used to make croque-monsieur.
“I nearly fell off my chair laughing,” said bakery director John Foster. “Asking a Brit to make French sticks?”
But Sandrine Huguot, head of press for the French baking firm, said: “We have nothing against our English friends, if they respect the ingredients, use them in the same way, with the same culture, then why not?”
