Rolls-Royce to upgrade facilities for new model

Rolls-Royce has announced plans for upgraded facilities and new manufacturing methods to be implemented in line with the production of its latest model, the RR4.

Due for release in 2010, sketches of the car were revealed alongside the news that the manufacturing facilities at Goodwood in Chichester, Sussex will add a second assembly line and extended paint, wood and leather workshops. Workers will adjust to a two shift pattern next year. Rolls-Royce said the changes mean they will employ several hundred new staff.

“RR4 will mark a milestone in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars,” Chairman, Ian Robertson said. “The business continues to go from strength to strength and the introduction of this new model will expand the appeal of the brand. We look forward to this next chapter with anticipation and confidence.”

The new model will be manufactured at Goodwood alongside the Phantom line. Smaller than a Phantom, it will feature “a more informal presence with a greater emphasis on driving.” It will feature a new engine that will be kept unique to Rolls-Royce. No prices for the RR4 have been confirmed but a figure of just below £200,000 is being touted.

We know the economic environment is tough but we also know UK manufacturing is strong and resilient - if there were ever a year when the successes of UK Manufacturing need to be recognised then surely 2009 is it!
